About Happy Meats
Read about the Happy Meat approach to welfare and additive free meat...

Free range...
Born and reared outside in small family groups. Our old traditional British and Irish breeds of animals really cannot cope with being kept intensively indoors. Only perhaps in the depth of winter may we bring our pigs indoors. A pig with a wet bed is not a happy pig!

Traditional rare breeds...
Rare breed animals like Gloucestershire Old Spot and British Lop pigs, Shetland, Jacob and Soay sheep and Dexter, Belted Galloway and Long Horn cattle typically live here.

Additive free feed...
Our pigs are fed on GM free natural grains, roots and pulses. The feed does not contain bone meal, growth promoters, antibiotics or any other typical additive.

Herb and clover rich pasture...
Our lambs and cattle feed on our wonderful herb-rich pasture of the Teme Valley.

Cruelty-free husbandry...
Our animals live a long and stress free life here. We do not castrate the pigs, clip their teeth or tails, nor do we ring their noses. They love to dig!

Local abattoir...
We use a small local abattoir to avoid long stressful journeys for our animals. We have worked with this local abattoir for many years now and we know the staff well. We are confident that they treat our animals respectfully and that we do get our own animals back!

Traceability...
Happy Meats offers you complete traceability and confidence. Other than another small scale farmer who produces 3 dexter cattle a year for us, all our meat is reared here on our or our next-door neighbours farm. Recently we have formed a partnership with our neighbour. Our sheep and cattle roam freely between the two farms. This important development allows our small business to grow yet remain confident that our principals are not being lost. Happy Meat animals are reared to the same standards we demanded when we stopped being vegetarian and started this business in 1997. There is no compromise!

Farming for the future...
Happy Meats has shown that it is still possible for a small farm to be sustainable. We are proud that:

  • We produce healthy, wholesome meat from happy animals
  • We balance farming and countryside conservation
  • We treat our co-producers, staff and suppliers fairly. We want them all to be there for us tomorrow!

Worth the wait...
Being old fashioned rare breeds, our animals take time to grow and mature. The taste makes it all the worth while!
